SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS AT FINE ART ASIA 2017
“Union and Reunion”
Presented by the Hong Kong Antique and Art Galleries Association
In art, as in life, there are many different kinds of meeting. This special exhibition examines the subtle relationships between artworks and the fascinating stories behind their meetings or their reunification.
Some of the artworks featured were made as a pair, destined to remain together. Others originated together and somehow became separated, but later were miraculously found and reunited. Many Hong Kong dealers also have stories about how pieces that have passed through their hands have been sold, only to later turn up again and be re-acquired, sometimes in quite unexpected places.
On a wider scale, the artistic traditions of two countries may have met and intertwined in the past, creating a surprisingly wonderful creative legacy. Meanwhile, contemporary artists seize on creative opportunities to join forces in a meeting of different art media.
There is a Chinese saying, “All encounters in life are reunions after long times apart.” There is no doubt that meetings, where intentional or serendipitous, centuries ago or in the modern day, can be most fruitful.
Curated by Eric Leung and presented by Fine Art Asia 2017, “Sculpture Asia” highlights the exceptional talent of sculptors in Asia today. The exhibition features the work of established Hong Kong artists such as Kevin Fung Lik Yan, Kum Chi Keung, Danny Lee Chin Fair and Lam Yau Sum; as well as Chinese artist Dai Yun, Mongolian sculptor Xiao Yu; and innovative Korean sculptors Chung Kuk Taek, Kim Bong Soo, Kim In Tae, Lim Jong Chan and Ra In Chul.
